The Bad Plus Joshua Redman Joshua Redman, The Bad Plus

Unusual collaboration between piano trio with a thing for pop and a post bop saxophonist. Free jazz and ballads – everything goes here.

This is no ordinary collaboration. The Bad Plus have been one of the most unpredictable piano trios in recent years criss-crossing from classical music to prog rock and back. They rose to wider attention at the turn of the century with their Nirvana and Black Sabbath cover versions. Saxophonist Joshua Redman boasts a somewhat more conventional post bop background and recently released an almost ecstatic live album "Trios Live". The four have recorded an amazingly accessible album where the slightly atonal "County Seat" and "Faith Through Error" represent the only possible spanner in the works. In particular, it's bassist Reid Anderson's pop-oriented compositions ("As This Moment Slips Away") that provide the perfect foundations for Redman's melodic solos. The final number "Silence Is The Question" begins as a ballad before building to a free jazz crescendo. A crazy album.
